Most advice on these two cards says to start with the cheaper one. We think that is backwards for almost anyone who pays bills through PhonePe. The two cards share an issuer, an app and a redemption system where one point is worth one rupee, and they differ in fee by ₹1,000 a year. The more expensive card recovers that ₹1,000 on a level of spending that most PhonePe users already reach.
Two cards, one structure
SBI Card and PhonePe issue both cards on Visa and on RuPay, and both are applied for and managed inside the PhonePe app. Each earns at three rates: a top rate on spends made in the PhonePe app such as recharges, bill payments, insurance, flights and hotels; a middle rate on online spends at merchants like Amazon, Swiggy, Zomato, Myntra and MakeMyTrip; and a base rate on everything else, including scan-and-pay and tap-and-pay. Reward points convert at ₹1 each, as statement credit or as vouchers on the SBI Card rewards portal. Both cards waive the 1% fuel surcharge.
The accelerated tiers on both cards carry monthly caps, set out in SBI Card's terms, so neither is an open-ended 10% or 3% card for very large bills.
Side by side
| PURPLE | SELECT BLACK | |
|---|---|---|
| Joining and annual fee | ₹499 + taxes | ₹1,499 + taxes |
| Renewal fee reversed at | ₹1 lakh annual spend | ₹3 lakh annual spend |
| Welcome benefit | ₹500 PhonePe gift card | ₹1,500 PhonePe gift card |
| PhonePe app spends | 3 points per ₹100 | 10 points per ₹100 |
| Online spends | 2 points per ₹100 | 5 points per ₹100 |
| Other spends | 1 point per ₹100 | 1 point per ₹100 |
| Domestic lounge | None | 4 a year, 1 a quarter, no spend condition |
| Priority Pass | None | 2-year membership |
On both cards the welcome gift card roughly cancels the first-year fee. SBI Card has also run a first-year-free offer on both; under that offer the first-year fee is waived and the welcome gift card is not issued, so the first year nets to zero either way.
The break-even is lower than it looks
The fee gap is ₹1,000 a year before taxes. On PhonePe app spends, SELECT BLACK earns 7 points more per ₹100. Divide one by the other and the gap closes at about ₹14,300 of PhonePe spends a year, or roughly ₹1,200 a month. One electricity bill and a mobile recharge clear that in most households.
For someone who never pays bills on PhonePe and only shops online, the difference is 3 points per ₹100, and the gap closes at about ₹33,300 a year, or ₹2,800 a month. That is still a modest online basket.
The harder number is the renewal waiver. PURPLE reverses its fee at ₹1 lakh of annual spend. SELECT BLACK needs ₹3 lakh. A cardholder spending ₹1.5 lakh a year gets PURPLE free and pays ₹1,499 for SELECT BLACK. Even then, ₹20,000 of PhonePe bill payments a year earns ₹2,000 on SELECT BLACK against ₹600 on PURPLE, and the ₹1,400 difference nearly covers the fee before online spends are counted.
The lounge and the Priority Pass
SELECT BLACK includes four domestic lounge visits a year, one a quarter, and PhonePe's page states there is no spend condition to use them. At a time when many cards tie lounge visits to quarterly spends, that is unusual for a ₹1,499 card. The Priority Pass is a two-year membership; the page promises the membership and not a count of free international visits, so visits abroad should be assumed chargeable unless the card's terms say otherwise. SELECT BLACK also pays a ₹5,000 travel voucher at ₹5 lakh of annual spend. PURPLE has no lounge access and no Priority Pass.
Where neither card fits
Both cards reward a narrow pattern: bills and bookings inside PhonePe, then online shopping. Offline spends earn 1% on either, which a flat cashback card beats. For a broader online earner, the SBI Cashback card pays on online spends without routing through one app. Points on the PhonePe cards also stay inside SBI Card's portal and do not transfer to airlines or hotels.
Who Should Get Which
SELECT BLACK suits anyone who pays household bills through PhonePe or spends ₹3,000 a month online, which covers most people considering either card. PURPLE suits a light user who wants a RuPay card on UPI, spends around ₹1 lakh a year in total, and will not think about the card again. A reader outside the PhonePe app entirely should look at a general cashback card and skip both.

Frequently asked
What is the difference between PhonePe SBI Card PURPLE and SELECT BLACK?
PURPLE costs ₹499 plus taxes a year and earns 3 reward points per ₹100 on PhonePe spends, 2 on online spends and 1 elsewhere. SELECT BLACK costs ₹1,499 plus taxes and earns 10, 5 and 1. SELECT BLACK also adds four domestic lounge visits a year, a two-year Priority Pass membership and a ₹5,000 travel voucher at ₹5 lakh of annual spend. One reward point is worth ₹1 on both.
How much do I need to spend for SELECT BLACK to beat PURPLE?
The fee gap is ₹1,000 a year. SELECT BLACK earns 7 points more per ₹100 on PhonePe spends, so about ₹14,300 of PhonePe spends a year covers the gap. On online spends alone, where the difference is 3 points per ₹100, it takes about ₹33,300 a year.
Is the renewal fee waived on PhonePe SBI cards?
Yes, on spend. PURPLE's ₹499 renewal fee is reversed at ₹1 lakh of annual spend, and SELECT BLACK's ₹1,499 fee is reversed at ₹3 lakh of annual retail spends in the previous year.
Do PhonePe SBI cards work on UPI?
Both cards are issued on Visa and RuPay. The RuPay variant links to UPI inside the PhonePe app, so scan-and-pay transactions earn reward points at the rate for other spends.
